How to play the Flexibility, Level 3 Game
This is the Episodic N-Back Game, and is a more complex extension of the Flexibility Dual N-Back Game (Level 2).
Before playing this game, ensure that you know how to play the Flexibility Dual N-Back Game.
In this Episodic N-Back Game you are required to both switch ‘mental sets’ from Block to Block and also integrate information from different modalities. This trains your working memory and attention systems in a way that standard dual n-back games do not. It trains mental flexibility, and – as in Level 3 of the Capacity Game, helps you train your memory for personal experiences – known as episodic memory.
In this Level 3 Game, each Block alternates randomly between:
Standard Dual N-back – labelled ‘OR’
XOR Dual N-Back – looking for matches in either stimulus stream alone, but not when they occur together
AND Dual N-Back – looking for matches when they occur simultaneously in both streams but not when they occur alone (shown in the top of the game window here).
XOR Dual N-Back Game
In XOR dual n-back mode, your task is to respond when there is a location/movement OR color/letter match but not when there is a location/movement AND color/letter match at the same time.
Unlike the standard dual n-back in Level 2, the XOR mode requires you to use your attention control to suppress a simultaneous n-back ‘match’ response (see figure below).
AND Dual N-Back Game
In the AND dual n-back game, the challenge is to respond when there is a location (or movement) AND color (or letter) match at the same time, but not when either stimulus stream is a match on its own.
AND and XOR n-back modes require opposite responses to each other. The AND mode requires you to use your attention control to suppress an n-back ‘match’ response when there are matches that occur in one stimulus stream only (see figure below).
Response keys are always as shown below.
